Location

Carrachan Cottage is located in the Slumbay area of Lochcarron.

To find the cottage , you should drive all the way through the village to the end of Main Street, pass the Bank of Scotland/Halifax (on the right hand side) and take the 2nd left onto Church Street.  Follow Church Street and you will rise up a small incline, as the road levels off there is a house on the left pass this and then take the first road on the left at the signpost "Dal a'Chladaich" which will take you down towards the bay. Follow the sweep of the road left towards the shore and continue on until almost the end of the road - Carrachan Cottage is the second last house from the far end.

By Road

From the south, there are 2 possible routes by which to approach Lochcarron.

Firstly, the more scenic, but rather slower, route follows the A82 along the shores of Loch Lomond, over Rannoch Moor and through Glen Coe to Fort William; then continue (on the A82) north to Invergarry, and then via the A87 and A890/A896. From Fort William onwards, you will pass several well-known landmarks on the way - the Commando Monument at Spean Bridge,  Cluanie Inn, the 5 Sisters of Kintail, and Eilean Donan Castle.

Secondly, the somewhat faster, albeit further, route, takes the A9 north from Perth to Inverness, and then via the A835 to Garve, the A832 to Achnasheen, and finally the A890/A896. This route encompasses mostly good fast roads, although the single carriageway sections of the A9 can sometimes seem slow in heavy traffic.

By Rail

For railway enthusiasts, the railway line that services Lochcarron featured as one of Michael Palin’s “Great Railway Journeys of the World”.

The line runs from Inverness (from where there are rail links to the rest of the UK) to Kyle of Lochalsh and passes through some very spectacular scenery.

The nearest railway station to Lochcarron is at Strathcarron, around 3 miles away. There is a local bus service which meets up with the train.

By Air

Inverness Airport is the nearest airport to Lochcarron.  The airport is about 70 miles from Lochcarron and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to drive.

Various car hire outlets exist at the airport.
